American Airlines debuts retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER with new business suites

American Airlines has launched the first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER under its “Project Olympus” initiative, marking a strategic shift to phase out international First Class in favor of expanded premium seating. The first aircraft, N718AN, entered commercial service on September 2, 2026, on the New York (JFK) to Buenos Aires (EZE) route.

The new cabin configuration increases the total number of premium seats from 116 to 144. The centerpiece is the Flagship Suite business class, which features 70 seats with privacy doors in a 1-2-1 layout. Additionally, the aircraft includes 44 Premium Economy seats and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats. This reconfiguration makes American the final major U.S. carrier to eliminate international First Class on these aircraft, with sales of the Flagship First product scheduled to end on the 777-300ER fleet by November 19, 2026.

The airline plans to complete similar upgrades for its entire fleet of 20 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft by 2027. The modernization includes technical upgrades such as high-speed Wi-Fi, 4K entertainment screens, and wireless charging capabilities. This move is intended to align the fleet with shifting market demands, prioritizing high-density, high-quality business and premium economy products over traditional first-class offerings.
