American Airlines flight diverts to New York due to broken lavatories
An American Airlines Boeing 777 flight traveling from Madrid to Dallas-Fort Worth diverted to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday due to malfunctioning lavatories. Out of the eight typically available on the aircraft, only two remained operational.
The flight, carrying 287 passengers, was declared a ‘pan-pan’—an urgent but non-life-threatening situation—by the pilot. Because the plane had more than four hours of fuel remaining, it was over its normal landing weight, a condition that can lead to issues such as overheated brakes.
After landing safely at JFK, the aircraft remained on the ground for more than three hours before continuing its journey to Dallas. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the diversion was due to the inadequate number of working toilets.
