American Airlines flight: Laptop fire injures passengers
A passenger's laptop caught fire on American Airlines Flight 2398, an Airbus A321 traveling from Atlanta to Dallas, causing smoke to fill the cabin and injuring several passengers. The incident occurred approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled landing at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
Air traffic control recordings captured the pilot reporting a cabin fire in the rear of the aircraft and estimating that four to five passengers sustained burns. Flight attendants responded quickly, using a specialized thermal containment bag to extinguish and secure the device within approximately five minutes. The crew also moved the burning laptop to the middle section of the aircraft to isolate it from structural walls and emergency exits.
The aircraft landed safely, where emergency responders and medical teams were waiting. One passenger received medical treatment at the airport and was subsequently released. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident. The event highlights the ongoing risks of lithium-ion battery thermal runaway, with the FAA reporting 58 such incidents involving smoke or fire on passenger planes so far in 2026.
