American Airlines launches automatic seat preference feature

American Airlines has launched a new feature in its mobile app that automatically reallocates seats based on passenger preferences. The service is available to AAdvantage members on single-passenger reservations who have already selected a seat.

Users can opt in to specify preferences such as aisle, window, or middle seats, as well as requests for bulkhead rows or positions closer to the front of the cabin. If a matching seat becomes available, the app automatically updates the reservation and notifies the customer. The feature is active up to 24 hours before departure.

To ensure no additional costs are incurred, seat changes are strictly limited to the passenger's existing cabin class. The initiative was developed through American’s ADEPT program, a two-year initiative designed to recruit and develop early-career technology talent. Executives noted that the project utilizes AI to streamline the travel experience and reduce the need for customers to manually monitor seat maps.
