American Airlines offers alternatives to $1,000 expired mileage fee

American Airlines offers alternatives to a $1,000 fee for reinstating expired AAdvantage miles. After a customer discovered 141,977 miles had expired due to 24 months of inactivity, two methods were identified to restore the balance without the high cost.

One option involves opening a personal Citi AAdvantage Platinum card and earning 1,000 Loyalty Points within three months. Alternatively, a customer can earn 2,000 Loyalty Points through any means within the same three-month period. Once the required points are earned, the miles are reportedly restored automatically.

AAdvantage miles typically expire after 24 months without account activity, though earning or redeeming miles resets the expiration clock. Notably, flying with the airline does not prevent expiration if the miles are earned through a different rewards program.
