American Airlines pilots new system to address rolling delays
American Airlines is piloting a new approach to address “rolling delays,” a phenomenon where passengers receive frequent, small updates that extend a flight's delay over several hours. Instead of providing optimistic, short-term updates, the carrier intends to provide more realistic delay estimates from the outset.
The pilot program is being tested at the airline's hub in Charlotte. Under this new system, the airline plans to estimate boarding times based on the actual arrival time of the inbound aircraft. This aims to prevent situations where passengers are sent to gates without an aircraft present because the official flight status has not yet reflected the true delay.
These delays are often caused by maintenance issues or crew and aircraft being delayed in other cities. While the new transparency may negatively impact the airline's official on-time performance statistics, the move is intended to improve the passenger experience by allowing travelers to plan more effectively.
