American Airlines policy addresses support animals and passenger allergies

The ongoing debate regarding the conflict between passengers traveling with support animals and those with animal fur allergies continues in the aviation industry. This tension centers on whether the needs of passengers with disabilities requiring service or emotional support animals take precedence over the medical requirements of passengers with allergies.

American Airlines policy allows service animals used by persons with disabilities to accompany customers in the aircraft cabin at no charge, provided they do not obstruct aisles or emergency evacuation areas. However, if an animal is disruptive or too large to fit under a seat without encroaching on another passenger's space, the airline requires the animal to travel in a passenger-provided kennel in the cargo hold.
