American Airlines Ends Free Economy-to-Business Upgrades on Domestic Routes

Effective August 25 2026, American Airlines will change its complimentary upgrade policy for AAdvantage elite members on nine three‑cabin domestic routes that offer a separate Premium Economy cabin. On these routes—New York JFK ↔ Los Angeles, New York JFK ↔ San Francisco, Boston ↔ Los Angeles, Dallas‑Fort Worth ↔ Honolulu/Kona/Maui, Phoenix ↔ Honolulu, and Chicago ↔ Honolulu/Maui—elite members booked in Main Cabin will be upgraded only to Premium Economy when seats are available, rather than directly to Business Class. Passengers already in Premium Economy will still be eligible for complimentary upgrades to Business Class, and those who purchase an instant upgrade to Premium Economy retain the same Business‑Class upgrade option. Systemwide upgrades and upgrades on two‑cabin flights remain unchanged, and any previously confirmed Business‑Class upgrades will be honored as long as itineraries are not altered. American frames the change as a streamlining of its upgrade process as Premium Economy expands, but many frequent flyers have expressed frustration, calling the move a devaluation of elite status benefits.
