American Airlines Tightens Flight Refund Policy, Limits 24‑Hour Refunds

American Airlines has revised its cancellation and refund rules, now offering a full refund only for tickets purchased at least seven days before departure when the reservation is cancelled within 24 hours. The change eliminates the prior provision that allowed refunds for tickets booked at least two days before a flight. The airline said the new policy aligns with the Department of Transportation’s minimum requirement, which mandates a 24‑hour refund window for flights departing a week or more after booking, but permits carriers to set stricter terms. Passengers can still hold a reservation for 24 hours at no charge, and the airline noted that its policy now matches those of JetBlue, Southwest and United, while Delta maintains a less restrictive approach.
