American Airlines announces fleet Wi-Fi upgrades and major route reductions

American Airlines is undergoing significant operational shifts, including network restructuring and technological upgrades. The airline will begin equipping its mainline fleet of over 1,030 Airbus and Boeing aircraft with high-speed Starlink satellite Wi-Fi starting in early 2027, aiming for speeds up to 1 Gbps.

However, the carrier is also reducing its footprint in several regions. In Mexico, American Airlines will suspend its Tulum-to-Miami route on January 5, 2027, and cancel its Los Angeles-to-Tulum service. The airline will maintain only one daily flight from Tulum, connecting to Dallas-Fort Worth, and will transition to smaller Embraer 175 aircraft for this route. This reduction follows similar exits by Aeroméxico and Volaris from the Tulum airport.

Other network adjustments include the discontinuation of flights to Doha, Qatar, and the termination of routes in Santa Maria, California, and Tijuana, Mexico, due to performance and demand issues. Additionally, the airline is closing its local office in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to centralize services at its regional headquarters, though flight operations in the country remain stable. In leadership news, Brian Znotins, Senior Vice President of Network Planning, has reportedly left the company.
