American Airlines to install Starlink satellite Wi‑Fi on 500+ aircraft

American Airlines announced that, beginning in the first quarter of 2027, it will equip more than 500 narrow‑body Airbus A321XLR and A321neo jets with high‑speed satellite Wi‑Fi supplied by SpaceX’s Starlink network. The service is expected to deliver broadband speeds of up to one gigabit per second, enabling streaming, online gaming, video calls and other cloud‑based work while in flight. Heather Garboden, director of Customer Experience at the airline, said the partnership aims to provide "the fastest Wi‑Fi available in the market" and to give passengers a "door‑to‑door" connected experience.

The move follows a broader industry trend, with carriers such as Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways, United Airlines, Air France and several IAG airlines already rolling out or planning Starlink installations across their fleets. Those airlines cite the low latency and high capacity of the low‑Earth‑orbit constellation as a new competitive advantage that can enhance passenger satisfaction and loyalty, especially on long‑haul and premium routes.
