American Airlines announces fleet upgrades and lounge fee increases

American Airlines has announced a major overhaul of its narrowbody fleet, including the return of individual seatback entertainment screens. Reversing a previous policy that encouraged passengers to use personal devices, the airline plans to install 4K displays, Bluetooth audio connectivity, and USB-C charging on approximately 800 single-aisle aircraft. The rollout will begin with new Airbus and Boeing deliveries in 2028 and continue through retrofitting existing jets into the early 2030s.

Alongside these technological upgrades, the airline is reconfiguring its cabins to increase premium seating. Currently, First Class and Main Cabin Extra account for roughly 25% of narrowbody capacity, a figure the carrier aims to raise to 40% in the coming years. Additionally, American Airlines plans to introduce SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed internet service on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft starting in 2027.

Separately, the airline is updating its Admirals Club membership program. Effective August 23, standard membership fees will increase significantly, reaching a maximum of $1,400 per year. To provide more options, a new lower-priced single membership will be introduced for $750, though it will lack guest privileges and partner lounge access. Household memberships are also being phased out.
