American Airlines updates overbooking policies and AAdvantage procedures

American Airlines is implementing several operational and service changes. A new company directive regarding overbooked flights instructs gate employees to prioritize securing volunteers for seat relinquishment in exchange for compensation. To prevent flight schedule disruptions, agents are authorized to offer larger compensation amounts and are directed to hold departures until an agreement is reached with enough passengers. The directive states, “The aircraft door must remain open while any potential involuntary denied boarding is outstanding.”

Additionally, the airline is updating its AAdvantage program to allow members to use a sliding scale to balance points and cash when booking award tickets via the app or website. On the service side, American is expanding its economy class snack selection to include Tate’s Bake Shop chocolate chip cookies and Peterson’s snack mixes, alongside existing Biscoff and Goldfish offerings.

These changes come amid ongoing discussions regarding the airline's service model, as some observers note that the experience on narrowbody aircraft has increasingly mirrored that of low-cost carriers due to factors like reduced seatback entertainment and tighter seating configurations.
