American Bible Society report shows decline in religious beliefs

The American Bible Society’s 16th annual State of the Bible report reveals a decline in belief regarding traditional Christian doctrines among U.S. adults. For the first time, a major national survey shows belief in the virgin birth of Jesus has dropped below 50%, with 49% of respondents stating it is at least ‘probably true.’

Overall, approximately 62% of Americans—about 171 million people—believe in the supernatural in some capacity. While 53% of adults believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus, belief in other biblical miracles is lower; for instance, 44% believe in the account of the parting of the Red Sea.

Data indicates a downward trend in these specific doctrines. According to Pew Research Center figures, belief in the virgin birth was at 73% in 2014 and fell to 66% in 2017. In contrast, the report notes that practicing Christians maintain much higher levels of faith, with 97% believing in the virgin birth and 99% believing in the resurrection.
