American democracy commemorated through international educational forums

Various educational institutions and organizations are hosting events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence and discuss the state of American democracy.

The University of South Carolina Upstate will host a Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture Series titled “America at 250: The Promise of the Declaration & the Future of American Democracy.” Scheduled for September 16, the forum will feature legal scholars and a panel including Paul Butler from Georgetown University Law Center and Marvin Chochotte from Dartmouth College to examine ideals such as liberty, equality, and justice.

In Germany, the Fridtjof-Nansen-Akademie, in cooperation with the Atlantische Akademie Rheinland-Pfalz and the Hessische Landeszentrale für politische Bildung, is organizing a youth seminar titled “Democracy in Distress.” Held in Bingen am Rhein from October 8 to October 9, 2026, the seminar aims to explore the history of U.S. democracy, current systemic challenges, and the implications of upcoming midterm elections on the nation's future.
