American detainees in Russia face growing medical concerns

The recent release of Marine veteran Robert Gilman from Russian custody has intensified concerns regarding the health and well-being of other Americans remaining in Russian prisons. After more than four years behind bars, Gilman’s released state has prompted advocates and families to highlight the deteriorating medical conditions of other detainees.

Among those still held in Russia are Olga Jezler, who has been detained since 2022 and suffers from endometriosis, a Navy veteran with gastrointestinal illness, an individual with an autoimmune disease, and another facing severe dental damage. Advocates from the firm Global Reach argue that these citizens are being held due to their American status rather than legal violations and emphasize that the U.S. government should not wait for detainees to reach a life-threatening state before prioritizing their return.

The U.S. Department of State has stated it is aware of the medical care concerns and is continuing to raise the issue with Russian authorities.
