American Express and Covirán expand retail and payment presence in Spain
American Express is expanding its presence in Spain by targeting everyday consumer spending. During 2025, the financial institution added 250,000 new points of sale to its network. Key expansions include the incorporation of Alcampo for grocery and household purchases, the deployment of Tap & Go technology in the Madrid Metro and Indigo parking, and new partnerships with retailers like Maisons du Monde and various travel and dining establishments.
Separately, the Spanish cooperative Covirán reported the opening of five new supermarkets in September. These openings, which utilize the Covirán Origen model, added 930 square meters of commercial space and created 17 new jobs.
