American Express Australia launches $2 million Shop Small grants for local businesses
American Express Australia announced the Shop Small Grants programme, offering up to $2 million in funding for Australian small businesses. Grants of $20,000 each are available to up to 100 eligible firms that are independently owned, have an Australian Business Number, employ no more than 20 full‑time staff and operate from a permanent physical premise in any Australian state or territory. Applications opened on 27 July and close on 6 September.
The programme is funded with an initial $1 million from American Express, with a matching contribution of up to another $1 million based on eligible American Express card transactions made at participating Shop Small businesses between 1 August and 7 August. Managing Director Corrina Davison said the grants provide “an opportunity for up to 100 small businesses to access funds that can help them invest in their future and continue making a difference in the communities they serve.”
The launch was accompanied by the Amex Shop Small Destination Index, a consumer survey of more than 4,000 Australians. The survey found that 93 % of respondents believe supporting small businesses is important, and South Melbourne was identified as the top “Shop Small” destination.
