American Express Centurion Card: Origin of the “Black Card” Label
The term “black card” refers to ultra‑exclusive credit cards that offer unlimited limits and a suite of premium perks. The first such card was the American Express Centurion Card, launched in 1999 and marketed as the “Black Card.” It is invitation‑only, targeting customers with very high spending needs, and its secrecy and limited issuance have turned it into a status symbol for the ultra‑wealthy.
Other issuers have followed the colour‑based branding, releasing their own black‑or‑premium cards such as Visa Infinite and Mastercard World Elite. The use of black conveys luxury, power and exclusivity, reinforcing the perception that these cards are reserved for a small, elite clientele rather than a design feature that determines value.
