American Express expands Membership Rewards redemption, new calculator shows low value of direct use

American Express introduced a Membership Rewards Redemption Value Calculator that lets cardholders compare the worth of points across redemption options, revealing that direct redemptions such as Pay with Points, gift cards and Amex Travel bookings typically provide far lower value than transfers to airline and hotel partners.

At the same time, Amex extended its redemption system for U.S. cards, allowing points to be used directly through Apple Pay on devices running iOS 18, with transaction data kept private. The rollout coincided with other market shifts: HDFC Bank imposed new monthly bonus caps on premium cards, while prices for Apple’s MacBook Pro M5 surged in Nepal and a UK reseller sought extra payments after price hikes. One buyer combined Amex points with an AI‑driven price search to secure a MacBook Pro M5 at a discount of over €2,000 compared with listed prices.

These developments highlight the growing attention to maximizing credit‑card points value and the impact of regional pricing volatility on high‑end consumer electronics.
