American Express expands global merchant network and corporate tools
American Express is executing a multi-faceted global expansion strategy focused on increasing merchant acceptance, targeting younger demographics, and enhancing corporate spend management.
Globally, the company has reached over 190 million merchant locations, marking an increase of approximately 20 million locations this year. This growth is supported by partnerships with entities such as Adyen, Mercado Pago, and Alipay.
In Spain, the company is expanding its presence in everyday spending categories. Notable recent additions include Alcampo for groceries, Maisons du Monde for home decor, and the implementation of Tap & Go technology within the Madrid Metro. Juan Orti, President of American Express in Spain, noted that approximately 65% of new customer acquisitions are young people, driven by a focus on lifestyle experiences such as travel, gastronomy, and events.
Additionally, the company has launched a new Amex Corporate program. This suite includes Cashback Cards, integrated expense management software, and a mobile app designed to provide businesses with greater visibility and control over employee spending. Future updates are expected to include AI agents to assist with expense submissions and financial insights.
