American Hellenic Institute urges US to take stance on Eastern Mediterranean

The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) has sent a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding his visit to Athens for the 6th US-Greece Strategic Dialogue. In the letter, AHI President Nick Larugakis emphasizes the strategic importance of US-Greek relations and calls on Washington to take a clear stance against Turkish activities in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Institute describes Greece as a ‘loyal, reliable, and stable ally’ of the United States, noting that Athens exceeds NATO defense spending commitments and consistently fulfills obligations under the Greece-US Defense Cooperation Agreement. The letter highlights Greece's role as a gateway for American LNG into Europe via infrastructure in Revoutsa and Alexandroupoli.

Additionally, the AHI notes the strategic importance of Souda Bay as a critical hub for US military presence and operations in the region, particularly during the Middle East crisis. The Institute also mentions Greece's decision to enhance base protection by transferring a Patriot missile battery to Crete.
