American men's tennis seeks to end two-decade Grand Slam drought

American men's tennis is seeking to end a Grand Slam drought that has lasted over two decades. The last American man to win a major singles title was Andy Roddick, who defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero at the 2003 US Open.

Since that victory, ninety Grand Slam tournaments have passed without an American male champion. Former US Open winner Juan Martín del Potro noted that while the era of the ‘Big Three’ created an unmatched level of competition, current American players have the potential to break the pattern.

As Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton prepare to face each other in the US Open semifinals, they represent the most immediate opportunity to end the drought. Other notable American players currently in the upper echelons of the ATP rankings include Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.
