American Motors Corporation (AMC) history is highlighted through its performance models and engine development. The AMX was a two-seat hardtop performance car produced between 1968 and 1970, with the 1969 model year seeing the highest production volume of 8,293 units.

Historically, AMC transitioned to producing its own overhead-valve V8 engines in 1956 following the dissolution of a supply arrangement with Studebaker-Packard. Developed in under 18 months by an engineering team including David B. Potter and Len Bailey, the initial 250 cubic inch V8 produced 190 hp.
