Nigerian higher education receives NUC approvals and launches AI learning tools

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted regulatory clearance to American Open University Nigeria for three AI‑integrated postgraduate programmes – Master of Business Administration, Master of Information Technology and Master of Public Administration – to begin enrolments in the 2026/2027 academic session. Founder and President Prof. David S. Akanbi said the approval reflects rigorous assessment of the university’s faculty, facilities and governance, adding that artificial intelligence is “not a feature to be bolted onto traditional curricula”.

The NUC also issued an operational licence to the newly created Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Anambra State, allowing the institution to start academic activities across three faculties offering 17 accredited programmes. Founder Dr. Godwin Maduka described the university as a landmark investment that will transform the region into a hub for medical education, research and health‑sector employment.

Separately, Whiteplains British School in Abuja introduced “Mr Okeke”, an AI‑driven virtual teacher billed as Africa’s first AI tutor. School proprietor Dr. Francis Nwufoh said the tool aims to personalise learning, bridge gaps and equip students with 21st‑century skills while complementing, not replacing, teachers.
