American Psychological Association delays recognition of Jewish psychologists

The American Psychological Association (APA) has postponed a second time in 2026 the vote on whether to recognize the Association of Jewish Psychologists (AJP) as an Ethnic Psychological Association. Formal recognition would give AJP a seat on the APA Council of Representatives and official representation within the organization.

The delay has drawn criticism from the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Medical Association and other Jewish groups, who argue that rising antisemitism within the profession makes the recognition overdue. A coalition of existing ethnic psychological associations opposed the bid, saying most Jewish Americans identify as white and are already represented. The dispute highlights broader concerns about antisemitism and the place of Jewish identity in professional and academic settings.
