American Psychological Association issues guidance on classroom technology

The American Psychological Association (APA) has released a report regarding the use of technology in classrooms, suggesting that educators should focus less on total screen time bans and more on the specific nature of the technology being used.

The report highlights concerns regarding a new genre of educational technology that utilizes gamification—such as flashy graphics, customizable avatars, and earned rewards—to drive engagement. The APA warns that high levels of engagement or success within an educational game do not necessarily translate to improved intelligence or learning outcomes. Instead, the association recommends that school districts evaluate technology based on its ability to foster ‘durable knowledge and skills’ that students can apply in real-world contexts.

Furthermore, the APA advises caution regarding generative AI and tools that claim to enhance cognitive abilities without authoritative scientific evidence. The report suggests that schools should avoid technology that encourages multitasking, relies heavily on student self-management, or possesses human-like qualities.
