American Red Cross Declares National Blood Supply Crisis

The American Red Cross has announced a national blood supply crisis, the second such declaration in its history after a similar emergency in early 2022. The shortage stems from a steep drop in donations this summer, compounded by higher trauma cases, extreme heat, poor air quality and illness, leaving inventories—especially type O blood—dangerously low. The organization has begun limiting shipments of type O blood to hospitals and is urging eligible donors to schedule appointments immediately.

The U.S. Surgeon General has warned that the blood supply is far below the level needed to meet demand and continues to decline. Red Cross Biomedical Services President Chris Hrouda emphasized that adding just a few more donors at each drive could stabilize the supply, and the Red Cross is offering incentives to encourage donations.
