American retirees urged to optimize retirement plans and Social Security claims

Financial advisers highlight five primary retirement savings options—401(k) plans, traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEP‑IRAs and annuities—as the most effective ways for individuals to secure income in retirement.

A new survey shows that nine in ten Americans intend to claim Social Security before reaching the full retirement age of 67, despite the fact that early claiming at age 62 cuts benefits by up to 30 % and waiting until age 70 can increase monthly payments by about 24 %. The difference can amount to several thousand dollars per month, representing a substantial loss over a lifetime.

Retirement experts also counsel retirees to give purpose to their post‑work years by reviving old hobbies, maintaining physical fitness, staying socially active, and managing wealth prudently through careful budgeting, estate planning and modest investment to generate passive income.
