American Rheinmetall Secures U.S. Army Contract for Autonomous Hybrid Ground Vehicles
American Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Army to develop and deliver autonomous, hybrid‑powered uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs) under the Project Sustainment effort. The two‑year award calls for four hybrid‑powered UGVs that will transport supplies to forward troops, reducing soldier risk and increasing operational efficiency in contested environments.
The vehicles will be built on Harbinger Motors’ extended‑range plug‑in hybrid platform and will incorporate autonomy technology from Forterra and a natural‑language human‑machine interface from Primordial Labs. The partnership aims to provide voice‑controlled, load‑handling capabilities with payloads up to 18,000 lb and a range exceeding 500 mi, supporting the Army’s broader modernization and tactical sustainment goals.
