American Survey Shows Deep AI Pessimism and Calls for Shared Responsibility

A cross‑national poll of 24,000 adults in 30 countries found that the United States is the clear outlier in AI sentiment, with Americans markedly more pessimistic than respondents elsewhere. The study linked this gloom to the structure of the U.S. labor market and relatively modest unemployment benefits, which make AI appear as a threat to job security.

A separate Gallup survey of nearly 4,000 U.S. adults conducted in late 2024 reported that 87% say individuals should bear at least some responsibility for using AI responsibly, while 72% view AI as a major driver of misinformation. About two‑thirds (68%) believe government and businesses share equal responsibility for mitigating these risks, with Democrats expressing slightly higher concern than Republicans.

Together, the findings highlight widespread American unease about AI’s societal impact and a broad expectation that individuals, firms, and the state all play a role in managing the technology’s risks.
