American tourist rescued from Ausangate glacier in Peru
A 30-year-old American tourist, identified as Kyle Mateus Hermans, was rescued after spending approximately 24 hours lost near the Ausangate glacier in the Cusco region of Peru.
While hiking in the Anantapata sector of the Chillca community, Hermans suffered from severe altitude sickness (hypoxia). Despite his physical decline, he managed to set up a tent with assistance from local residents to seek shelter.
Following an SOS alert, the Pitumarca Police Station and the High Mountain Rescue Department (DEPSAM) of the National Police of Peru deployed to the Vilcanota mountain range. Rescuers located Hermans at an altitude exceeding 4,000 meters and evacuated him to the Pitumarca Health Center.
Medical staff provided oxygen and stabilization; authorities report that he is currently in stable condition. Local police officials noted that the tourist was traveling without a guide and have strongly recommended that visitors hire specialized professional accompaniment for high-altitude treks.
