American University in Cairo Honors Dr. Mustafa Yusuf with Research Excellence Award

The American University in Cairo presented Dr. Mustafa Yusuf, professor of Computer Science and Engineering, with its Research Excellence and Innovation Award during the spring 2026 graduation ceremony. The accolade recognizes his pioneering work in quantum‑computing‑based location‑determination systems, including the UniCellular and ModeSense technologies that can pinpoint a user's position using a single cellular tower, eliminating the need for GPS and aiding rescue teams in complex environments.

Yusuf’s research also introduced the “Human‑as‑a‑Sensor” concept, leveraging brain‑computer interaction to interpret neural signals for advanced sensing applications. His work has been published in leading international journals, earned multiple best‑paper awards, and benefited from the university’s acquisition of Egypt’s first quantum computer. In addition to his scientific contributions, Yusuf has helped promote Arab research through editorial roles with Communications of the ACM and mentored students who achieved top rankings in global ACM competitions.
