American Urological Association names David Penson as next editor of The Journal of Urology

The American Urological Association (AUA) has announced that David F. Penson, MD, MPH, FACS, will be the next editor of The Journal of Urology, the organization’s flagship scientific publication. Dr. Penson is scheduled to serve as editor-in-training beginning January 1, 2027, before commencing a three-year term as editor on January 1, 2028.

Dr. Penson currently serves as professor and chair of the Department of Urology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as well as professor of Health Policy at Vanderbilt University. He has authored over 300 scholarly works and has held editorial board positions for several major publications, including BJU International and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

In his new role, Dr. Penson will oversee the journal’s editorial strategy, peer review processes, and editorial board. He will work with AUA Publications staff to manage the journal’s impact and relevance amidst a rapidly evolving scholarly publishing landscape.
