Americans face rising retirement savings concerns
A 2026 study by Allianz Life reveals that 57% of Americans are concerned about having insufficient funds to live during retirement. The research highlights a significant psychological barrier among retirees, as 39% choose not to spend their accumulated savings due to the difficulty of converting large sums into a predictable monthly cash flow.
Economic pressures, including an annual inflation rate of 3.67%, are complicating financial stability for seniors, particularly regarding high costs for housing and healthcare. Furthermore, the personal savings rate saw a decline from 6.2% in early 2024 to 2.8% in the second quarter of 2026. The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index reached a low of 49.5 in June 2026, placing it in the bottom tenth percentile of its historical series.
