Americans oppose cryptocurrency in retirement plans, survey finds

A national survey by the National Institute on Retirement Security reveals significant American opposition to including cryptocurrency in employer-sponsored retirement plans. According to the findings, 53% of respondents oppose employers offering digital assets as investment options, while 77% view such investments as risky. Within that group, 46% characterized cryptocurrency as ‘very risky.’

The survey highlights growing anxieties regarding the broader state of retirement readiness in the United States. Approximately 80% of Americans believe the country is facing a retirement crisis, a notable increase from 67% in 2020. Additionally, 61% of respondents expressed concern about their ability to achieve financial security during retirement.

Economic pressures appear to be driving this insecurity. The report indicates that 68% of participants find it increasingly difficult to prepare for retirement, and 77% stated that debt prevents them from saving sufficient funds. These findings emerge as federal regulators and the administration consider expanding the types of alternative assets permitted in 401(k) and other defined-contribution accounts.
