Americans relocating to Europe report regrets over quality of life
A report from Wired indicates that many Americans who moved to Europe to escape the political climate in the United States are experiencing significant regret. While some relocated seeking political refuge or a slower pace of life, many have encountered difficulties regarding the standard of living and daily logistics.
Expatriates cited several challenges, including lower salaries, complex bureaucracy, and perceived difficulties with healthcare systems. Some individuals noted that amenities common in the U.S., such as certain household appliances, are often treated as luxuries in Europe. Additionally, some migrants reported feeling unwelcome or facing social friction in their new environments.
Data shows a rise in American migration to Europe, with the number of U.S. migrants doubling in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. In Spain, the number of American residents reached a record high in 2026.
