Italian Navy training ship Amerigo Vespucci dazzles New York crowds

The Italian Navy’s historic training ship Amerigo Vespucci arrived in New York in early July 2026 as the flagship of its North‑American tour, part of the celebrations of the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence. While docked at Pier 86, the vessel took part in the Sail 4th250 International Naval Review, drawing thousands of visitors and extensive coverage by U.S. media.

A program of diplomatic and cultural events was organised aboard the ship, including the presentation of the next edition of Vinitaly, a visit by senior Italian officials such as Defence Under‑Secretary Matteo Perego, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto and Ambassador Marco Peronaci, and the display of the America’s Cup trophy. In conjunction with the ship’s visit, a one‑off Vespa scooter styled after the Vespucci’s hull and livery was exhibited for the duration of the stay, highlighting Italian design heritage.

After the New York stop, the Amerigo Vespucci sailed to Boston before continuing its tour, with plans announced for a future arrival in Ravenna, Italy, later in 2026. The visit underscored the vessel’s role as a platform for naval diplomacy, promoting Italian culture and industry abroad.
