AMG Critical Materials finalises Zinnwald Lithium takeover in Germany

AMG Critical Materials, a Netherlands‑based raw‑materials specialist, completed the purchase of the remaining stake in Zinnwald Lithium on 27 July 2026, taking full ownership of the mining firm that plans lithium extraction in the Osterzgebirge region of Saxony. The deal added roughly 71 % of the company for about £42.2 million (≈€50 million), converting Zinnwald shares into AMG shares that will be credited to investors between 29 July and 10 August. AMG aims to start lithium mining by 2030, targeting up to 1.5 million tonnes of ore per year, and sees the project as a strategic part of Europe’s supply chain for batteries, automotive and defence applications. Saxony’s economy minister Dirk Panther welcomed the acquisition, saying domestic lithium will bolster the EU’s critical‑raw‑material resilience. Zinnwald’s CEO Marko Uhlig will remain in his post, while AMG plans to invest several million euros in feasibility studies for the project. The company employs around 3,600 staff across facilities in Europe, the US, China and other regions.
