Amiens police dog fine underscores dangers of petting stray dogs

In Amiens, a passer‑by was fined €150 after petting a police dog that was on duty. Veterinarians and animal‑behaviour experts explain that reaching for a dog's head can be perceived as a threat, especially for working dogs, leading to stress, growling or bites.

The French National Order of Veterinarians advises asking the owner’s permission, approaching from the side at the dog’s chest height, and letting the animal initiate contact. They warn that many dogs view a sudden hand over the head as an intrusion, which can trigger defensive behaviours. The incident has sparked public reminders to avoid unsolicited petting of dogs in streets and parks.
