Amir Tataloo faces death sentence in Iran over blasphemy charges

Iranian rapper and pop star Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, known professionally as Amir Tataloo, is facing a death sentence following allegations of ‘sabb al-nabi’, or insulting the Prophet Muhammad. While the Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty, the legal status of the case remains complex due to ongoing judicial reviews.

Tataloo’s legal team has pursued an extraordinary review under Article 477 of Iran’s Criminal Procedure Code, which allows for the reconsideration of judgments alleged to be contrary to Islamic law. Additionally, a request for clemency based on repentance was submitted under Article 114 of the Islamic Penal Code. Reports regarding the current status of these reviews vary, with some indicating the death verdict may have been overturned while others state the Supreme Court has upheld the sentence and the application remains under consideration.

Separate from the blasphemy charges, Tataloo is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for charges involving the encouragement of corruption and prostitution. His case has drawn international attention due to his celebrity status and his shifting relationship with the Iranian political establishment, having previously engaged with high-level officials.
