Amira Hass receives Manuel Vázquez Montalbán International Journalism Award
Israeli journalist Amira Hass, a correspondent for Haaretz, has been awarded the Manuel Vázquez Montalbán International Journalism Award in Barcelona. The award, presented in the cultural and political journalism category, recognizes her decades of reporting from within the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza and Ramallah.
During her acceptance, Hass addressed the nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, stating that there is no symmetry between the occupied Palestinians and the Israeli occupation. She described her work as documenting the mechanisms of settlement colonialism and patterns of power and domination. Hass noted that Israel's actions in Gaza align with long-term policies and that the military response to the October 7 attacks has led to large-scale destruction and repression.
Hass also highlighted the importance of her ability to express these critical views within Israel, citing it as evidence of freedom of expression in her home country despite the controversial nature of her reporting.
