AMIS method offers muscle-sparing hip arthroplasty
Orthopedic surgeon Dimitrios Lyras of Metropolitan General Hospital has discussed the AMIS method for hip arthroplasty, a procedure designed to replace damaged joints with high-strength metal and ceramic prostheses.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition where the protective cartilage in a joint gradually breaks down, leading to bone friction and inflammation. Risk factors for the condition include advanced age, obesity, genetics, bone deformities, and metabolic diseases.
While traditional hip replacement techniques often involve approaching the joint through posterior or anterolateral surfaces—which can result in the cutting of tendons and large muscle groups, causing pain and slow recovery—the AMIS method aims to perform the surgery without muscle injury.
