Amish Shah faces scrutiny over healthcare and legislative votes

Amish Shah, a Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, is facing scrutiny over his legislative record and political affiliations. Investigative reports and campaign advertisements from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) highlight his 2022 vote against a bill that would have prohibited doctors from performing certain transgender surgeries on minors.

Additionally, video footage from a 2019 Democratic Socialists of America event shows Shah expressing support for Bernie Sanders and advocating for a single-payer healthcare system. During the event, Shah criticized the free-market approach to healthcare, stating that no other industrialized nation offers healthcare through a free market. He also noted that the gap between the rich and the poor in the United States has contributed to decreased economic mobility compared to Europe.

In response to criticisms regarding his healthcare stance, Shah has characterized such claims as “cynical political attacks,” noting that as a physician with over 20 years of experience, he recognizes the complexities of different healthcare systems.
