Amit Shah announces UCC implementation in 21 NDA states by 2029
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the 2029 general elections. Shah stated that the UCC aims to replace various religious personal laws with a common legal framework for marriage, divorce, property, and adoption.
While BJP leaders welcomed the move as a necessary step for national uniformity, the announcement has drawn significant political opposition. Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and Harish Rawat criticized the push, with Khurshid asserting that no ideology should supersede the Constitution and Rawat alleging the move is a divisive tactic to mask governance failures. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also accused the BJP of using the UCC for communal politics. Additionally, JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak expressed opposition to implementing the code in Bihar, despite the party's support for the UCC in Parliament.
In other developments, Shah highlighted the government's achievements, including the abrogation of Article 370, the fight against Naxalism, and a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism. He also announced the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan,’ a month-long nationwide campaign from September 17 to October 17 to commemorate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public service.
