Amit Shah demands report from Punjab government over drug-related incidents

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the central government will seek a formal response from the Punjab government regarding two high-profile incidents involving the drug trade. These include the broad-daylight murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa and the death by suicide of Gulzar Singh in Dirba, who allegedly consumed poison following harassment after questioning local drug trafficking.

Shah criticized the law and order situation in Punjab, stating the state is struggling with rising threats from drugs, gangsterism, and organized crime. He questioned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s ability to ensure public safety and called for an impartial investigation into potential political patronage of criminals.

In response, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asserted that eradicating drugs is the state's top priority. He emphasized that the Punjab police have been granted full autonomy to act against traffickers without political interference. To bolster enforcement, Mann announced the provision of 117 new vehicles for Deputy Superintendents of Police. Mann also countered central criticism by suggesting that the central government should focus on securing international borders and preventing drug smuggling through other states.
