India's Amit Shah confronted by Parliament protests over July 20 police crackdown

On August 3, opposition members in the Lok Sabha staged a protest demanding Home Minister Amit Shah answer questions about the July 20 police crackdown on anti‑paper‑leak demonstrators in Delhi. MPs displayed banners and shouted slogans such as “Amit Shah Jawab Do” and “Amit Shah kahan gayab hain?”, while leaders including Akhilesh Yadav, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Congress MP K.C. Venugopal called for Shah’s resignation and accountability for the alleged use of pellet guns and sticks with nails on protesters.

The disruption forced Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House until noon, halting the Question Hour. The protest occurred during the third week of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session, which also features the introduction of bills such as the Indian Statistical Institute Bill and the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill. Opposition parties also raised the alleged Ram Mandir donation theft case and other contentious issues.

The All‑India Students’ Association (AISA) echoed the parliamentary demands, urging the removal of both Amit Shah and Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, and accusing the police of excessive force, including pellet‑gun fire and batons with nails. AISA president Neha Bora highlighted a 23‑day hunger strike and called the movement a broader campaign for accountability over the July 20 incident.
