Amit Shah launches ₹8,941 crore Yamuna rejuvenation projects

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 43 water and sewerage projects in Delhi, valued at approximately ₹8,941 crore. The initiative aims to prevent untreated wastewater from entering the Yamuna river by intercepting sewage at its source.

The project portfolio includes the inauguration of 10 projects worth ₹2,827 crore and the commencement of 33 new projects worth ₹6,114 crore. Key components involve upgrading eight existing sewage treatment plants (STPs) to increase capacity from 78.2 to 140.8 million gallons per day (MGD), constructing 29 decentralized STPs, and laying 1,034 km of new sewer networks.

One major highlight is the construction of a new 124 MGD capacity STP in Okhla, which will be the largest in the national capital. The government has set a target to ensure the full cleaning of the Yamuna by May 2029 through a coordinated effort between the Centre and the governments of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
