Amit Shah to chair Odisha-Chhattisgarh Mahanadi water dispute meeting

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to chair a meeting in New Delhi on October 1 to address the long-standing Mahanadi River water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The meeting will be attended by the Chief Ministers of both states in an effort to advance discussions toward a mutually acceptable settlement.

Separately, the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal has scheduled its next hearing for October 15. The Secretary of the Central Water Commission (CWC) has already submitted a report to the tribunal regarding previous discussions, in compliance with its directives.

The tribunal, established in 2018 under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, is tasked with adjudicating the water-sharing conflict. Its tenure was recently extended, with a deadline for the final report and decision set for January 13, 2027.
