Amit Shah sets 2029 deadline for drug-free India

During Police Commemoration Day ceremonies at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a national target to eliminate the drug menace in India by December 31, 2029. Shah emphasized that narcotics abuse threatens future generations, burdens the economy, and provides financial support to anti-national organizations. He called for a coordinated, nationwide campaign involving all police forces to implement the roadmap set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Reflecting on internal security, Shah stated that the country has made significant progress in addressing long-standing challenges. He noted that regions previously considered critical hotspots—including Kashmir, the Northeast, and areas affected by Left-wing extremism—are now peaceful. He specifically credited the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and the CoBRA Battalion for the successful elimination of Naxalism, which he noted had caused the deaths of over 3,600 security personnel and approximately 13,700 civilians between 1981 and March 2026.

In related developments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Punjab's Mansa district. The takeover follows consent from the Punjab home department and a notification from the Centre. Jhota was shot dead on October 13 while conducting a live social media session.
